The Adventures of Birdie and Bogey: Learning The Game of Golf

I long ago lost touch with my inner child. My mother has said on a number of occasions that I was born old. It is difficult, therefore, for me to judge whether The Adventures of Birdie and Bogey will appeal to its target audience.

That said, I can report that Birdie and Bogey is a good looking book that is chock full of beginners’ information on the game. The story—such as it is—follows two young lads as they prepare for, and then play, their first round of golf. The book touches on points such as types of clubs, on-course behavior, fixing pitch marks and raking bunkers, and where to stand when someone is hitting. It’s all good stuff.

I do have a concern, however, that with all that information, it may be too dense.

As befits a childrens’ book, the interior is lavishly appointed with colorful art. As you can see in the cover photo above, the illustrations are bold and bright and look to me as though they were painted in oils. I think it probably will appeal to kids of that target age, because it is similar to many books my own sons at one time had on their bookshelves.

With the holidays approaching, I think this would make a good gift for the young children of a golfer. At the very least, they’ll have a better idea of what their golfing parent does while he’s away from home.
