The Vmobile Ikoyi Ladies Open Championship

I think I’ve found the most obscure golf championship on the planet: The Vmobile Ikoyi Ladies Open Championship.

It’s a two day event starting on November 3, in Lagos, Nigeria.

I don’t think it’s going to make ESPN.

  1. Yes, obscure. Here’s the definition of obscure:

    Not readily noticed or seen

I had to read an African news website to find out about it. It has not been reported on in any western news source that I have found.

That makes it obscure. Not bad, not undeserving, not unworthy, nor even second rate. But definitely obscure.

I love the fact that Nigeria has a women’s open. The post is an observation that there are golfing events going on in the world that no one, outside the immediate area, has ever heard of. And that ESPN, among other outlets are never going to cover them, because they don’t fit with their idea of a major sporting event.

Nor is this jingoistic. The definition of jingoism:

Extreme nationalism characterized especially by a belligerent foreign policy; chauvinistic patriotism.

I am not belligerent toward Nigeria.

But my post on Jean Van De Velde? Now that’s jingoistic.

  2. What an ignorant, jingoistic thing to say.  Obscure because it’s in Nigeria?  Take a trip to Nigeria and stay for a week or three; stay long enough to pop out of your American bubble and experience life there, then see if you think a golf tourney there feels “obscure”.
