Thrift Store Find: Washtenaw Country Club Tumblers From 1969

Washtenaw Country Club Tumblers From 1969

I enjoy stopping in at thrift stores to see what I can find of interest. Recently, my local thrift had a couple of Washtenaw Country Club Tumblers from 1969.

There are two different glasses. On one, it just has the old Washtenaw Country Club crest with the jumping goat. The goat is an homage to the club’s 1899 days when goat and sheep kept the fairways trimmed.

On the other, an inscription says “Invitational Tournament” with the year 1969. An image of the club logo is on one side, while the clubhouse is on the other. The clubhouse is much grander than the current one (which is still quite nice).

The clubhouse in the tumbler’s illustration was built in 1929, just in time for the Great Depression, putting Washtenaw Country Club in a financial bind from which it did not recover until 1946.

On March 15, 1987, the 1929 clubhouse burned in a conflagration that required 70 firefighters and a dozen trucks to control. The fire caused $625,000 in damage ($1.6 million in today’s dollars). The new (current) clubhouse opened in 1989 at a cost of $1.4 million ($3.5 million in today’s dollars).

A photo of the clubhouse from the 1929 – 1987 era is below.
