There’s a lot to like about the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the 2014 US Open. Most of the usual stars are in a tie for 16 or better, and there also are a few surprises, such as 49-year-old journeyman Fran Quinn.
Martin Kaymer is -5, and three shots clear of the quartet of Kevin Na, Graeme McDowell, Brendon DeJonge, and Fran Quinn. In a normal tournament, that might be a good indicator of Kaymer’s eventual win, but this is the US Open.
As for Phil and his quest for the Career Slam, he is still in the game with an even par round that put him five back. As has often been said: “You can’t win the US Open on the first day, but you CAN lose it.”
