A look at the 2012 Valero Texas Open

  • Playing out of the Nos. 126-150 category in his first Valero Texas Open start, Ben Curtis sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to win by two strokes over Matt Every and John Huh.
  • The win, Curtis’ fourth on the PGA TOUR, ended a winless drought dating to the 2006 84 LUMBER Classic.
  • With weekend scores of 73-72, Curtis became the first player since Jim Furyk (2010 TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola) to not break par on the weekend en route to a win on the PGA TOUR. .

    More on Ben Curtis

  • The 2003 British Open champion kept his solid play going after his win in San Antonio, finishing T13 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T5 at the Wells Fargo Championship and T2 at THE PLAYERS Championship.
  • Curtis made it to through the first three FedExCup Playoffs events, resulting in a 41st-place finish in the final FedExCup standings.
  • In his last start before the Valero Texas Open, Curtis finished T21 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.
  • With last year’s win in San Antonio aside, Curtis’ history in the state of Texas hasn’t been an ideal one. Of eight starts in the Shell Houston open, five starts in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and one start at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, he hasn’t managed one single top-10 finish.
  • Should Curtis successfully defend his title in San Antonio, he would become the third to do so since 2000. Justin Leonard successfully defended his title in 2001, as did Zach Johnson in 2009. Arnold Palmer (1960-62) and Bill Mehlhorn (1928-1929) have been the only others to achieve the feat.

    A look at the field

  • World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, No. 9 Matt Kuchar, No. 12 Ian Poulter and No. 15 Charl Schwartzel lead a group of 10 players inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
  • Twelve of the top 30 in the FedExCup standings, including three in the top 10: Matt Kuchar (No.3), Charles Howell III (No. 8) and Brian Gay (No. 10).
  • The runner-ups to Ben Curtis last year at TPC San Antonio, Matt Every and John Huh.
  • Past winners of the Valero Texas Open (5): Ben Curtis (2012); Brendan Steele (2011), Justin Leonard (2007, 2001, 2000); Tim Herron (1997) and Bob Estes (1994).

  • With his T3 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño earned $297,600 for a total of $502,100 in three starts this season, surpassing the total earnings of the player who finished No. 150 on the 2012 money list ($474,295).
  • He now has the opportunity to join the PGA TOUR as a Special Temporary Member for the remainder of the 2013 season.
  • If he does so, he will be eligible for unlimited sponsor exemptions in his attempt to earn his 2013-14 TOUR card through the Non-member Money List or Non-member FedExCup Points List.

    1. A lot of interest will be on Rory no question. I hope he plays well and gets into some form before the US Masters. It would be great to see him and Tiger going head to head at Augusta.

I like the chances of Matt Kuchar here. He’s having an excellent season and looks primed to scoring a win right before the first major of 2013.
