Tim Finchem warned last week that the Tour would lose some of its sponsors and tournaments. This surely is the first of that salvo: Verizon has dropped The Heritage, one of the more popular spring tournament events.
The 40-year-old Heritage is played at Pete Dye’s Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina. The course is memorable for the candy striped lighthouse behind the 18th green. The tournament apparently is popular on the tour for its proximity to Augusta National—the Masters is played the previous week—and its laid-back atmosphere, which was perfect for decompressing after a major.
I’ve enjoyed watching the tournament for the course’s contrast to Augusta, and for the occasionally ridiculous windy conditions. I can remember watching Davis Love trying to putt on a green where just moments before the flagstick had bent at a right angle to the wind.
Expect someone to pick up the title sponsor slot on this one. I can’t see it going the way of the Buick.
