At The Volvik LPGA – Friday May 26, 2017

LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor
The 18th at the LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor. The tournament runs through Sunday May 28, 2017 at Travis Pointe Country Club.

This Memorial Day weekend, I’m a part of the media presence at the LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This is the tournament’s sophomore year, and organizers have made quite a few upgrades: more grandstands (including one sponsored by Titos), more food venues, and an overall better spectator experience. As with every LPGA tournament I’ve attended, the Volvik LPGA Championship is very family friendly and a good price for a day’s entertainment.

The LPGA players could not be nicer. I watched several, including superstar and recent tournament winner Lexi Thompson spend an inordinate amount of time posing for selfies and signing autographs.

For Ann Arbor area fans and players of the game of golf (like myself), this is a great opportunity to see some of the world’s best players in action. I have been to PGA Tour events (Buick Open, The Colonial, PGA Championship), Senior Tour events (USGA Senior Open), and the US Amateur; the players at the LPGA tournaments I have seen are as good at their game as any. It is true that they don’t hit it as far as PGA TOUR players, but almost all of the LPGA players hit the ball further and with more accuracy than the average weekender. In fact, I’ve argued that the weekender can learn a lot more about how to work around a course from LPGA players than from PGA TOUR players.

Tickets are $25. Park at the Washtenaw County Farm Council fairgrounds. You can get tickets there as well.
