Warwick Hills Hosts First GAM Four-Ball Championship

Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club—which hosted the PGA TOUR’s Buick Open for 44 years—will be the site of the first Golf Association of Michigan Four Ball Championship. The Championship was inspired by the creation of the US Amateur Four Ball Championship, which replaced the USGA’s Public Links Championship.

The Four Ball Championship will feature 76 two-golfer teams. Maximum handicap is 10.8.

Among the teams are Michigan’s top golfers: Casey Baker and Mike Ignasiak from the Ann Arbor area, Brad Bastion and Patrick Fayad from Shelby Township, Ian Harris and Brett Hudson from Bloomfield Hills, Steve Anderson and Carl Moraw from Troy, Nathan Clark and John Murphy from Charlotte, Bill Zylstra and Wesley Pikula from Dearborn Heights and Michigan State University men’s golf coach Casey Lubahn playing with former Spartan and former Michigan Amateur champion Jimmy Chestnut.

During its run as host of the Buick Open, Warwick Hills was considered by players to be one of the best conditioned courses on tour. Among the Buick Open winners were:  Tiger Woods, Fred Couples, Vijay Singh, Rocco Mediate, Kenny Perry, Justin Leonard, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Tom Weiskopf, Lanny Wadkins,  Billy Casper, Tony Lema, Julius Boros and Michigan’s own Dave Hill.

I miss the Buick Open. I visited a couple of times and always thought Warwick Hills would be a great place to play.
