Washtenaw Charity Classic Tops $70k In Donations To Folds of Honor

With a $14,000 donation from Washtenaw Golf Club‘s fourth annual Charity Classic, the club now has donated more than $70,000 to Folds of Honor.

Folds of Honor is a nonprofit that provides educational scholarships to the families of fallen or disabled military members and first responders. Founded by Colonel Dan Rooney, an Air Force Pilot who also is a PGA Professional, the organization has awarded more than 502,000 scholarships since 2007. The Foundation’s spiritual home is the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan.

The outing featured World Golf Hall of Famer Dennis Walters, who performed his unique show of trick shots and inspiration. Walter, who was paralyzed in an accident as a young man, has spent his life showing proving that you should “never let someone tell you that you can’t do something.”

Washtenaw Golf Club is celebrating its 125th anniversary this summer. A private club for most of its existence, Washtenaw has been open to the public since 2018. In 2020, it was purchased by a group of investors headed by Michigan Golf Hall of Famer Dave Kendall.

Golfers visiting Washtenaw for a round will find the welcoming nature of a public course with the same conditions and attentiveness it offered as a private club (I was a member when it was a private club, so I have some perspective on this).

Over the last several years, Washtenaw has been working under a master plan created by noted golf architect Ray Hearn to restore the course to much of its original style and intent.

The Washtenaw Charity Classic is one of the best outings I’ve played in and is one I look forward to every year. Put it on your calendar for next year. And if you’re looking for a place to host an event — from a wedding to an outing — the quality of the Charity Classic makes me think you can’t go wrong by giving Washtenaw a call.
