The field is limited to the first 25 teams of four amateurs. Prior to the event, a golf professional will be assigned to teams as a fifth member. The event is a “shamble” with the two best net scores of five counting for the team.

It is an outstanding event for an outstanding charity that I have been honored to participate in for the last couple of years.

The outing in 2024 includes a show by World Golf Hall of Famer Dennis Walter, who has travelled the world performing a golf show since being paralyzed in an accident in 1974 at the age of 24.

Washtenaw Golf Club puts on a terrific outing, and even if you can’t make the Charity Classic, consider the club for your own outing, event and wedding needs.

Folds of Honor is a PGA of America aligned charity that provides scholarships for the dependents of fallen and disabled service members and first responders. It was founded by Lt. Colonel Dan Rooney, who is not only a fighter pilot, but also a PGA of American professional.

The story behind the creation of Folds of Honor chokes me up every time I hear it. Rooney was on a commercial flight that was carrying the remains of Army Corporal Brock Bucklin — escorted by his brother Corporal Brad Bucklin. In spite of the airline pilot requesting that the passengers remain seated until the casket was disembarked as a sign of respect, passengers got up and exited the plane.

Through a window, Rooney could see Bucklin’s wife and young son standing alone on the tarmac.

Rooney determined at that point that he would do something for the families of those who sacrificed themselves for their fellow Americans.

The next year, Rooney created the Folds of Honor Foundation. Since its creation in 2007, the Foundation has provided more than 29,000 scholarships worth $145 million dollars. Patriot Golf Days are held all over the United States to support the foundation; American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan, has become the spiritual home of the Foundation.
