West Virginia Golf Pair Post Top 20 Finish At Ka’anapali

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 4, 2018) – A pair of Mountaineers finished in the top-20 to lead the West Virginia University golf to an eighth-place finish at the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on Sunday.

Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene shot seven-under-par, finishing in a tie for 15th place while tying the program’s lowest 54-hole total of 206. Senior Max Sear was six under with a 207 to tie for 18th place.

“Today we failed to take advantage of the score-able conditions,” coach Sean Covich said. We just didn’t make enough putts when it was all said and done. Overall, it was a solid week for us, and a good start to the season. We showed what we were capable of this fall and need to make some improvements and come out ready to go in February.”

No. 39 West Virginia finished with a three-round total of 271-280-284=835 for 17-under-par as the Mountaineers tied Boise State for eighth place. No. 26 Cal finished 47 under with an 805 to take home the team title, while No. 27 North Florida was the runner-up at 36-under-par with a 54-hole total of 816.

After spending the first two rounds in the top 10, Sharpstene shot two-over-par with a 73 on the day. He finished seven under at 65-68-73=206 to tie the program’s lowest 54-hole total, originally set in 2017 by Alan Cooke and matched by freshman Kurtis Grant earlier this season.

Sear carded an eagle on No.1 and added a pair of birdies in shooting three under with a 68 in the final round, moving up seven spots in the standings. He shot 68-71-68=207, finishing six-under-par.

Sophomore Mark Goetz birdied four holes on the final round, but had five bogeys to shoot one over with a 72. His three-round total of 69-69-72=210 put him at three-under-par and tied for 33rd place.

Sophomore Logan Perkins finished tied for 57th place, shooting two over with a score of 69-72-74=215. Junior Etienne Papineau carded a total of 71-75-71=217 to tie for 71st at four-over-par.

The Mountaineers will embark on a winter hiatus and will resume play with a head-to-head match against Penn State on Feb. 3 in Orlando, Florida.
