WVU’s Ransone Advances to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier
West Virginia University golfer Jon Ransone has advanced to the sectional qualifier after placing second at the local qualifier for the 116th U.S. Open on Monday at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport.
Ransone was a key part of first varsity season for WVU golf since 1982. This year the team competed in its first-ever Big 12 Golf Championship.
Ransone, a rising junior from Hilliard, Ohio, carded three birdies and an eagle to finish even par 72. Ransone was one stroke behind leader Conner Hayden. The top three finishers advanced to the sectional qualifier, along with two alternates.
“I am very proud of Jon and his round today,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “Advancing to the next stage of the U.S. Open qualifying is quite the accomplishment and a great way for him to start off his summer amateur schedule. Playing in events like this during our off-season is vital for our guys to continue to gain valuable tournament experience.”
Ransone will now compete at one of the 10 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifiers to be played on June 6. His site is to be determined.
A total of five Mountaineers participated in the event, as Alan Cooke, Cole Hand, Tae Wan Lee and Mason Short joined Ransone in the field. The course is a familiar one for the team, as Pete Dye Golf Club serves as one of WVU’s home courses and will play host to the second annual Mountaineer Intercollegiate this October.
