West Virginia’s Max Sear Takes 11th at Tavistock

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 24, 2017) – Shooting two-under par, Max Sear finished ahead of 12 nationally ranked golfers to pace the West Virginia University golf team during the final round of play at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday. The Mountaineers joined UCF in hosting the event at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Florida.

Sear carded a three-round total of 71-71-72=214. After shooting one under in each of the first two rounds, Sear used a trio of birdies to shoot even par in the final round of play. He tied for 11th place, defeating nine of the 17 top-100 players in the field, including No. 9 Will Gordon of Vanderbilt (T-21st) and No. 10 Nick Hardy of Illinois (T-51st).

“Great playing by Max all week on a very challenging course,” Mountaineer coach Sean Covich said. “Just being a part of this prestigious event means a lot to our program. We will learn from our rounds this week and not only be a better team the rest of the season, but be a better team when we arrive here next fall. Make no mistake about it, this is a championship venue and a ‘major’ for college golf. If you want to truly compete at the highest level, you have to play in an event like this on a golf course like this.”

The Mountaineers finished 16th at 29 over par, scoring 296-300-297=893. No. 21 Cal took home the team title at six under par with an 858, while No. 28 Illinois and No. 10 Florida tied for the runner-up spot at five under par with scores of 859.

Individual Avery Schneider shot eight-over par, tying for 51st place. His scorecard showed 74-73-77=224, as he shot five over par in the final round. Etienne Papineau joined his teammate in shooting eight over, finishing two over in the third round for a total score of 72-78-74=224.

Also competing as an individual, Logan Perkins shot 12 over par with a three-round tally of 228. He finished with 72-78-78=228 for 68th place.

Philipp Matlari shot 76-76-78 to accumulate a total of 230 across 54 holes. He tied for 78th at 14-over par.

Matthew Sharpstene and individual Drew Dewald tied for 78th place, each shooting 232 for 16 over par. Sharpstene finished at 78-75-79, while Dewald carded 79-76-77. Mark Goetz was a stroke back at 17 over par, tallying 79-76-78=233. Tristan Nicholls shot one over on the day, finishing at 77-83-73=233 to end the tournament at 17 over. Goetz and Nicholls tied for 84th place.

West Virginia will compete once more before capping fall play. The Mountaineers travel to Lahaina, Hawaii, from Nov. 3-5 for the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational.
