Western Golf and Country Club Membership Deals

Western Golf and Country Club in Redford has long had a reputation as one of the jewels of Michigan golf. Dating to 1927, its centerpiece is a Donald Ross course. It’s a course I’ve long wanted to play. But club membership on my teacher’s salary just isn’t possible.

For a limited time, though, prices are coming down. To celebrate its 85th anniversary, Western is offering a “Fabulous Fairways” deal, with reduced membership fees from August 1, 2011 to March 31, 2011. That includes full access to golf, swimming, tennis, dining and more. One of my former student teachers was the tennis pro there for a while, and he was quite enthusiastic about the range of activities the club offers.

Full details on the membership deals follow:

  1. A membership that runs from 8/1/2011 to 3/31/2012 costs $1,200.  Assume the golf season runs to 11/1/2011.  That is 3 months of unlimited golf for $400 a month.  Assuming they allow one to walk rather than purchase a cart for $25 a round, that still sounds rather pricey for SE Michigan.

Membership deals rarely are “deals” unless one can play 5 or 6 times a week.

  2. Agreed on price of golf. I think with a club of that sort, though, there are lots of non-golf benefits: tennis, swimming, and social activities.

One of the things we have missed most since dropping our Washtenaw CC membership is the ability to go to the restaurant. The food was good, it was quiet, and the staff treated the kids great. Sitting on the porch overlooking the course was wonderful.

  3. Brian,

Golf season in Michigan typically runs until Thanksgiving, if not later. I played last year in early December. $1200 would be pricey for a “golf club”, but Western offers a lot more than just golf. They have the best Men’s Only 19th Hole in the area, ask anyone who’s been there before
