Westwood’s The New Number One

As of today, Lee Westwood is the new world number one in golf. It could be a short-lived reign, though. This week’s HSBC Champions event features all three pretenders:Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Martin Kaymer. A win by any of those three could dethrone the current king, who is nursing a leg injury.

To be honest, though, I’m not sure the world golf rankings are much worth worrying over. Is Lee Westwood really the best player on the planet. I’m not sure. For my money, that distinction belongs to Martin Kaymer, who actually has won a Major.

And to those who wondered about my blasé attitude toward the HSBC Champions event, I think it’s changing. It’ll be interesting to see if any of the four top players can step up and make a statement.
