Who Are The 2022 Masters Favorites?

Who Are The 2022 Masters Favorites?

Jon Rahm is the clear favorite to win the 2022 Masters, with average odds of +1000 (10/1) across four international betting sites.

Augusta National is a course that rewards experience. From 1936 on, just one rookie — Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 — has won the Masters. Rahm has been close since 2018, finishing 4th, T9, T7 and T5.

Rahm has had a decent season thus far, standing at 16 in the FedEx Cup Rankings and 2nd in the Official World golf Rankings. This season the Spaniard has four top tens but no wins.

A lot of eyes are on Justin Thomas this year. In the averaged odds, he comes in at +1333 (40/3, or an implied 6.98% chance of winning)

Thomas has been in good form, with six top ten finishes on the season. Thomas is 13th in the FedEx Cup and 7th in the official World Golf Rankings.

Statistically, he’s hot. In the 2021 – 22 season, Thomas ranks 2nd in scoring average, 8th in driving efficiency and 8th in putts per round. He’s number one in putts inside three feet, which should help on those tricky Augusta greens.

Thomas’ record at Augusta, however, is not particularly impressive. Since 2018, he has finished T17, T12, 4th and T21.

Cameron Smith is in next, with average odds of +1400, or 14/1 and a 6.67% implied probability to win.

It would be hard to have a hotter hand than Smith this season. He has won twice in tough fields: The Players and the Sentry Tournament of Champions. In all, he has four top tens.

Those results have led him to third in the FedEx Cup and 6th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

In the 2021 – 2022 season, Smith is first in Scoring Average, 1st in Birdie Average and 6th in Putts Per Round.

Smith’s record at the Masters is quite good. Since 2018, he has gone T5, T51, T2 and T10. Those are the kind of numbers that can turn a skeptic into a believer.

Dustin Johnson and Scottie Scheffler are both in with an average of +1533, or 46/3 and an implied 6.12% chance of winning.

Johnson is a known quantity, with 24 PGA TOUR wins, including two Majors: the 2020 Masters and 2016 US Open. This year, Johnson has two top tens. He ranks 84th in the FedEx Cup rankings, and 8th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Scheffler is a rising star who has three wins in 2022: The WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. There isn’t a hotter golfer on the planet.

As of this writing Scheffler is number one in the FedEx Cup rankings and number one in the world.

However, Scheffler has not really been in the running in his two Masters appearances. In 2020, he was T19 and in 2021, T18.

A couple of other interesting notes:

Average odds for Tiger Woods is +5533, or 111/2 and a 1.78% implied probability of winning. That’s enough to put him in the top 25 favorites. Is that wishful thinking from the Fanboys, or does he have a realistic chance?

Brooks Koepka is at +1800. Koepka is a bit of a Majors Savant, with four Majors among his eight PGA TOUR wins. He has two top tens this year, including a third at the Phoenix Open.

Koepka finished T2 at the Masters in 2019 and T7 in 2020, but missed the cut in 2021.
