Who’s In At The PGA TOUR Championship

One hundred twenty five players teed it up at the FedEx St. Jude Championship — the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Seventy made the cut into this weekend’s BMW Championship. Now thirty will go on to East Lake in Atlanta, for the 72 hole Tour Championship August 25 – 28 for a 72-hole season finale.

Because the Tour Championship is designed to reward season-long excellence, it uses an interesting handicap system. The best player for the season — in this case Scottie Scheffler — begins the Tour Championship at a hypothetical ten under. Patrick Cantlay, the second-place player, begins at eight under and so forth.

The system has taken quite a bit of criticism, but is worlds better than the old system, where a player could lose the TOUR Championship tournament, but win the TOUR Championship overall on points. In this case, the winner of the TOUR Championship tournament also will be the winner of the overall TOUR Championship — the FedEx Cup.

The list of players in the PGA TOUR Championship, along with their designated leads, follows:

  1. Scottie Scheffler (10 under)
  2. Patrick Cantlay (8 under)
