Who’s Russell Henley?

imagePGA Tour Rookie Russell Henley leads the Sony Open after two rounds, and set a Sony Open record in the process.

A product of the University of Georgia, Henley won the 2010 Haskins Award as the most outstanding collegiate golfer. In 2010, he tied as the low amateur in the US Open with Scott Langley. Then, at the 2011 Stadion Classic on the (then) Nationwide Tour, he shocked the pro golf world by winning as an amateur. He was just the second amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour (after Daniel Summerhays in 2007).

Interestingly, it’s Langley, also a rookie, who now sits at number two at the Sony Open.

Henley represented the US in the 2011 Walker Cup and the 2011 Palmer Cup.

After turning pro in 2011, Henley won the September 2012 Chiquita Classic in a playoff over Patrick Cantalay and Morgan Hoffman.

Given his pedigree, it would be a great story, but not really a surprise if Henley hangs on to win the Sony Open.

  1. He’s just about there and only one round away from a famous victory. It’s great to see these rookies playing so well in their first season.

I’m wondering if we will see the same trend as last year with a lot of first time winners on tour?
