When it comes to orthopedic injuries and their effect on golf, few are in a better position to comment than Dr. Bill Mallon.

Mallon was a two time All American At Duke who played on the PGA TOUR from 1976 – 1979, posting three top tens. After leaving the tour, Mallon returned to Duke to study medicine. He now is the University’s Associate Consulting Professor of Orthopaedics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Mallon had previously commented on Twitter on the extent of Tiger’s injuries and their possible effect on his golf career. Now, he has a few things to say about whether Tiger will be able to show up at the Champions Dinner at Augusta National.

Honestly, whether Tiger shows up at the Masters Dinner is of little interest to me. What I do find interesting, however, is the information on the healing of fractures and their outcomes.

Mallon’s twitter threat follows:

On the one hand, no news is good news. Mallon thinks that because there has been no news about infection, Tiger likely is well on the way to recovery. On the other hand, ankle arthritis is a possibility.

In his previous thread, Mallon said he doesn’t think the broken leg and ankle will be what keeps Tiger off the tour:

One good thing is that this involves Tiger’s right leg and ankle. The right ankle is not under the same stresses that occur in the left ankle in the downswing, impact and follow-thru

It may, however, be that Tiger’s recent FIFTH back surgery is what does him in

Can Tiger play golf again, and if so, how long? From these injuries I suspect the answer is yes, he can play golf again. but I think the rate-limiting factor in his recovery is still his back. Golf Places a lot of s tress on the back.

One back surgery is difficult to recover from for a pro golfer. Five back surgeries? Each one makes recovery more difficult. I still think that will be more difficult for him to recover from.
