Williams Paces WVU at Graeme McDowell Invite

(September 28, 2015) – Chris Williams is tied for eighth place overall, leading the West Virginia University golf team after two rounds of action at the Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by Graeme McDowell at Shoal Creek Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama, on Monday.

Williams shot a 75 in the first round, registering a birdie on the fourth hole. He then went for seven birdies in the second round to card a 69 (-3), finishing the day at 75-69=144 (even).

The Mountaineers are in 12th place in the team rankings, shooting 302-301=603 (+27). Host UAB is atop the leaderboard at 292-283=575 (-1), while No. 7 South Carolina, North Florida and College of Charleston are all tied for second at six over par with two-round scores of 582. No. 21 Washington is two spots ahead of WVU, sitting 10th at 20 over par.

“Chris Williams played outstanding this afternoon,” said coach Sean Covich. “(To finish) three under par on this course, in these conditions, was impressive. We look forward to competing tomorrow in this great field.”

Easton Renwick birdied three and bogeyed six of the first 18 holes for three over par at 75. He shot five over par in the second round for a score for 75-77=152 (+8). Renwick is in a tie for 42nd place.

Max Sear posted a 36-hole score of 78-75=153 for nine over par, registering five birdies. Teammate Avery Schneider is one stroke behind, finishing 10 over par on the day with a score of 74-80=154.

In his WVU debut, Tristan Nicholls carded a 78-80=18 to end the day at 14 over. He birdied the 17th hole of the first round and the first hole of the second, but couldn’t maintain his pace and fell to eight over in the round.

The Mountaineers are paired with Winthrop and Washington for the third and final round, which is set to begin on Tuesday morning with tee times, as listed below:

Tristan Nicholls – Hole 10 at 8:39 a.m. ET
Avery Schneider – Hole 10 at 8:48 a.m. ET
Max Sear – Hole 10 at 8:57 a.m. ET
Easton Renwick – Hole 10 at 9:06 a.m. ET
Chris Williams – Hole 10 at 9:15 a.m. ET
