I was intrigued by the look behind the new Wilson Raw V6 irons. As the name suggests, they are raw steel, and designed to develop a rusty patina.
Troy Merritt has these in the bag at the Travelers Championship.
The Tour V6 Forged irons are made of 8620 carbon steel. A tungsten insert is positioned to lower the center of gravity, increasing launch angle without increasing spin.
Wilson says that the rusty patina will not affect either integrity or performance, although, I wonder if rust on the face might increase spin.
I also wonder how long it takes for these clubs to get to the very cool looking “phase three” in the photo above.
It is definitely a unique look. They remind me of those wedges from a few years back that were supposed to rust.
At the very least they make it less likely that someone will steal them out of your bag.
