MARSHALL – Powered by a 9-3 advantage in the singles round of matches at Marshal Country Club Sunday, the Private Team turned back the Public Team 16-8 to win the Women’s Atlas Trophy Matches for a second consecutive year.

The Public Team, trailing 7-5 to start Sunday’s singles play, used wins by Anci Dy of Traverse City and Bay Meadows, and Adie Maki of Canton and Fox Hills, and trailed just 8 ½ – 7 ½ through the first four singles matches.

The Private team won the next seven matches, however, and wrapped up the 30th edition of the Ryder Cup-style competition that features the top women golfers in the state representing private golf clubs and public venues.

Winners for the Private team on the day included Olivia Stoll of Country Club of Lansing, Natalie Samdal of StoneWater in Caledonia, Darci Stocker of Davison Country Club, Kimberly Dinh of Midland Country Club, Mia Melendez of Polo Fields in Ann Arbor, Elise Fennell of Railside in Byron Center, Sophie Stevens of Prestwick Village in Highland and Cindy Troyanovich of Country Club of Detroit.

Shannon Kennedy of Oakland Hills earned a half point by tying her match with Rachel Sampson of Forest Akers in East Lansing, and Cathy Netter of Monroe Golf & Country Club added the other half-point via a tie with Shelly Weiss of Southfield and the Michigan Women’s Golf Association.

The Private Team had a 4-2 lead after foursomes matches Saturday morning, and the two teams tied 3-3 in the afternoon four-ball for the 7-5 score heading into singles play.

Marshall Country Club is celebrating its centennial in 2022 and hosting the Women’s Atlas Trophy Matches was part of this month’s celebration of women playing golf at the club for 100 years.

The Women’s Atlas Trophy matches, named for the late Edward Atlas, a noted golf leader in Michigan, were first played in 1989 and have become a competition between women GAM members who are members of a private club, and GAM members who do not belong to a private club. The matches are unique in that teams are made up of golfers of all ages, including seniors and juniors.

The Private team leads the series 16-11 with three ties after the win Sunday.

The Private Team was captained by Jean Murray who said there were no losers over the weekend because of such stellar play.

“There were two incredible teams and we really enjoyed watching them play,” she said.
