WVU Golf Earns First-Ever Top-25 Ranking
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 23, 2019) – In just its fifth year of varsity competition, the West Virginia University golf team earned its first-ever top-25 ranking, coming in at No. 25 in the first Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll of the season.
The Mountaineers earned 73 points, sitting eight points back from No. 24 Mississippi. Arizona State claimed the top spot with 630 points and 14 first-place votes, followed by Georgia Tech with 603 points and nine first-place votes.
WVU is one of five Big 12 programs in the rankings. No. 3 Baylor (550) leads the way, while Texas Tech (461) ranks at No. 6. Oklahoma (385) comes in at No. 9 and is followed by Texas (382) at No. 10. Additionally, TCU (21), Iowa State (8) and Kansas (8) also received votes in the poll.
Most recently, the Mountaineers tied with No. 16 Louisville for third place at The Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, last week. Senior Etienne Papineau set a school record with a 54-hole total of 203, finishing sixth.
West Virginia will host The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Oct. 7-8, at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
