WVU Golf Headed to Seminole Intercollegiate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 9, 2017) – Remaining on the road through the University’s spring break, the West Virginia golf team travels to Tallahassee, Florida, from Friday through Sunday for the Seminole Intercollegiate.

No. 30 Florida State will host the tournament at the par-72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Course. Rival Penn State will be in attendance, as well as George Mason, Georgia Tech, Illinois State, Jacksonville, James Madison, Southern Illinois, Troy, VCU, West Carolina, Western Kentucky and Winthrop.

Golfers will tee off holes No. 1 and 10 at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and will start play at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Each day will consist of 18 holes, weather permitting.

“We’re excited to be playing in the Seminole Intercollegiate against some of the nation’s best programs, including Florida State and Georgia Tech,” coach Sean Covich said. “It’s nice to have some experience on this course. Alan (Cooke), Chris (Williams), Max (Sear) and Tristan (Nicholls) all played here last season, so maybe that will benefit us this week. “We just need to stick to having great attitudes, preparing like professionals and letting the results happen.”

Chris Williams, Max Sear, Alan Cooke, Etienne Papineau and Tristan Nicholls will represent the Mountaineers, while Avery Schneider will compete as an individual.

Sear, Cooke, Williams and Nicholls competed at the event in 2016, as WVU tied for 14th as a team. Sear fired a 69 in the final round to tie for 14th place, shooting two under par with a 214.

Most recently, Williams led the Mountaineers with a T-26th at the Tiger Invitational Presented by Jason Dufner. He shot a career-best 218 to finish two over par at the event, and carries a 74.39 scoring average into the tournament.

Sear boasts a team-best 73.06 scoring average after carding a 221 for five over par earlier in the week. He has a trio of top-10 finishes on his resume this season as well as three rounds in the 60s.

Alan Cooke and Etienne Papineau average 74.06 and 74.39 strokes per round, respectively. Nicholls enters the event with a scoring average of 74.72. Schneider will compete in his third tournament of the season for WVU.

Live scoring will be available via Golfstat, with a full recap posted on WVUsports.com following the conclusion of each round.
