MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 22, 2018) – After a disappointing finish in Florida earlier this week, the West Virginia University golf team looks to rebound at the 49th Annual Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, South Carolina, this weekend.

The event will take place Friday through Sunday at the Furman University Golf Course. USC Aiken, Akron, Charleston Southern, Dartmouth, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Harvard, High Point, James Madison, Marshall, North Florida, Presbyterian, Samford, Temple, USC Upstate, Virginia Tech, Wichita State, Winthrop and Yale make up the field.

Golfers will play one round each day on the par-72, 6,994-yard course. Tee times start at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. WVU is paired with Dartmouth and Furman, with tee times starting at 12:40 p.m. off hole No. 10.

“It’s always nice to come back to a golf course we’ve played before,” coach Sean Covich said. “Furman is a classic golf course and there will be a few tucked pins each round, but other than that, you just have to hit quality golf shots to get rewarded. We should feel comfortable out here this weekend as several of our guys played here last spring.”

Matthew Sharpstene, Max Sear, Etienne Papineau, Tristan Nicholls and Mark Goetz will represent the Mountaineers. Sear, Nicholls and Papineau competed at last year’s tournament as WU finished 14th in the field.

Sharpstene, who will play at No. 1 this week, ranks second on the team with a scoring average of 73.09. He led WVU at The Hayt earlier this week, finishing tied for 31st overall. This weekend marks his eighth tournament for WVU.

Sear leads the way for the Mountaineers with a scoring average of 72.77. He’s put up five top-20 finishes in tournament play and currently boasts a career scoring average of 73.59 – the lowest average by a multi-year player since the reintroduction of the sport in 2015.

Papineau enters the tournament with a pair of top-25 finishes on his resume and a 73.50 stroke average, while Nicholls boasts a trio of top-25 finishes and a pair of rounds in the 60s. Goetz, who has played in six of eight events as a freshman, tied the previous program record of 66 on his way to a third-place finish at the Martin Downs Collegiate last month.
