WVU Golf Ninth at Seminole Intercollegiate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 25, 2018) – With the final round of play marred by a weather delay, the West Virginia golf team dropped to ninth place at the Seminole Intercollegiate on Sunday at Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida.

The Mountaineers carded a 303 for 15 over par on the day, slipping three spots to ninth. They shot 291-289-303=883 for 19-over par. No. 20 Florida State claimed the team title at 20 under with an 844, followed by Jacksonville at 10 under with a score of 855. James Madison was a stroke back, finishing third with a team score of 856 for nine under.

“Not our best showing this week, especially in the final round,” coach Sean Covich said. “The weather certainly didn’t help any, but we still needed to be better prepared and maintain the right mindset. We need to learn from this week and close out the spring semester strong. We will have two weeks off to practice before our spring break trip and North Florida’s tournament at Sawgrass.”

Junior Max Sear posted his fourth top-20 finish in tournament play, taking 18th. He registered a trio of birdies in the final round, but posted back-to-back double bogeys to finish at four-over par on the day. Sear shot 69-71-76=216 to finish even par.

Sophomore Etienne Papineau just missed finishing in the top 25, taking 26th at two-over par. Carded a pair of birdies on the final day on his way to a score of 72-72-74=218.

A trio of birdies from freshman Mark Goetz moved him into a tie for 39th place. He finished at 75-73-75=223 for seven over.

Freshman Matthew Sharpstene struggled in the final round, shooting six-over par. He carded a score of 76-73-78=227 to shoot 11 over and finish in 52nd place.

Junior Tristan Nicholls shot 75-77-79=231 to finish 15 over and in 60th place.

Playing as an individual, senior Avery Schneider shot seven over on the day to finish at 71-76-79=226. He tied for 46th place at 10-over par.

WVU will take the next few weeks off. The Mountaineers return to action March 18-19 when they travel to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, for the Hayt Invitational.
