The West Virginia University golf team begins the spring portion of its schedule on Monday in the President’s Day Challenge at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas.
The Mountaineers will be joined by Rice and Houston in the one-day, 36-hole tournament. There will be no live scoring. Complete results will be available at the end of the day on WVUsports.com.
“We are very excited about start the 2016 spring season in Houston at the Shadow Hawk Golf Club,” said coach Sean Covich. “I am very grateful to Rice head coach Justin Emil and Houston head coach Jonathan Dismuke for hosting us at such a great course. Our guys are really looking forward to the opportunity to compete this week.”
The Mountaineers spent the weekend in Houston practicing at various courses. All 10 WVU golfers will compete in the event, with Easton Renwick, Max Sear, Mason Short, Chris Williams and Alan Cooke playing for the team score. Avery Schneider, Tristan Nicholls, Jon Ransone, Cole Hand and Tae Wan Lee will participate as individuals.
The par-72, 7,207-yard long course at Shadow Hawk GC boasts a Rees Jones design. Opened in 2000, it was named one of Golf Digest Magazine’s Best New Private Courses in its first year of operation and was name one of the top-30 courses in Texas by the publication in 2013-14. Shadow Hawk has a course rating of 74.7 and a slope rating of 133 on Bermuda grass.
Renwick, a senior captain, led the Mountaineers with a stroke average of 72.50 over 13 rounds in five events this fall. He also registered a pair of top-10 finishes, finishing 10th at both the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational (Sept. 14-15) and the Mountaineer Intercollegiate (Oct. 19-20). Renwick and Alan Cooke each shot a low-round 67 at the Marshall Invitational, while Renwick’s 208 at the tournament was the best 54-hole score of the fall for the Mountaineers.
Sear, a freshman, posted the best finish of the fall for WVU as he took second with a score of 139 at the 36-hole Wolfpack Intercollegiate. Sear’s score led the Mountaineers to a team-best sixth-place finish at the event with a two-round team score of 289-293=582.
The Mountaineers carded a team low round of 283 in both the first and third rounds of the Marshall Invitational. They recorded five top-25 individual finishes, including three top-10 finishes, and posted five rounds in the 60s.
