WVU Golf Heads To Ohio State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 8, 2016) – The West Virginia University golf team heads to its third competition in 10 days as the Mountaineers travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. The tournament will be hosted by Ohio State on the Scarlet Course Saturday and Sunday.

Tristan Nicholls, Avery Schneider, Max Sear, Cole Hand and Mason Short will compete for the Mountaineers at the event.

“We are shaking up the lineup this week to get our younger guys some valuable tournament experience before the end of the season,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “It will be nice to have Avery Schneider in the lineup, as he is from Columbus and has played several rounds on the Scarlet Course. Having him in the lineup will help the younger guys get familiar with the course. Weather conditions will certainly be a factor this weekend, as temperatures are expected to be in lower 30s with high winds and rain or snow. We will find out how mentally tough our guys are in these adverse conditions.”

Though a true freshman, Sear leads all players with a 73.92 stroke average through 10 tournaments. He has four top-20 finishes on the season, including a runner-up finish at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in October. Nicholls has made significant strides in recent tournaments with a 75.25 stroke average though his last eight rounds. He earned his first career top-10 finish at the President’s Day Challenge in February, tying for ninth place as an individual.

Originally slated to be 54 holes, the Robert Kepler Invitational has been whittled down to 36 holes due to weather concerns. Shotgun starts are schedule for 10:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the par-71, 7,455-yard Scarlet Course. WVU is paired with Dayton, Southern Illinois and Wright State for the first round and will start on holes 13 (Nicholls), 14 (Schneider), 15 (Sear), 16 (Hand) and 17 (Short).

Also in the field are host No. 78 Ohio State, No. 55 Northwestern, No. 37 UAB, No. 31 UNLV, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, No. 64 Liberty, No. 81 Maryland, No. 46 Kent State, No. 62 Michigan, No. 49 Michigan State and No. 29 Penn State
