WVU Golf Registers Record-Low Score at Ka’anapali

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 2, 2018) – A program-record low round has the West Virginia University golf team in a three-way tie for fourth place after the first round of play at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii, on Friday.

Additionally, sophomore Matthew Sharpstene sits in the top five of the individual leaderboard after the first 18 holes at the Royal Ka’anapali Course.

West Virginia shot a 271 as a team, finishing the round at 13-under-par. The Mountaineers’ score bests the previous program record by three strokes, as the team shot a 274 at last year’s Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic. WVU, ranked No. 39 in the nation, is in a three-way tie with Boise State and No. 34 South Carolina for fourth place. No. 9 Clemson sits atop the leaderboard at 22 under with a 262, while No. 26 Cal is in second at 18 under (266). No. 16 Georgia is three strokes ahead of WVU, taking third at 16-under-par (268).

“Great effort today by all the guys,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “We had all five in the round and it was a team effort. The winds were calm, which meant we knew we had to post a low round just to keep up. We will need to stay focused and hungry for the rest of the event.”

Sharpstene used four birdies and an eagle to finish six-under-par on the par-71 course. He carded a 65 in the round, just one stroke shy of his program-record and career-best 64. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native is in a four-way tie for fourth place.

Senior Max Sear is also in the top 20, shooting three under in the round. He registered six birdies, including three straight on the back nine, as he fired a 68 to tie for 20th place.

Starting on hole No. 12, sophomore Logan Perkins birdied three of his first 10 holes. He bogeyed No. 9 before rebounding with a birdie on his final hole. Perkins shot two under with a 69 and is tied for 34th place. Classmate Mark Goetz is also tied for 34th at two-under-par. He birdied five holes on the front nine and added another on the back nine for a 69 as well.

Rounding out the lineup is junior Etienne Papineau, who is tied for 54th. He recorded four birdies on the front nine, but also carded two bogeys and a double-bogey. Papineau finished even-par with a 71.

West Virginia returns to the links in a shotgun start at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. They are paired with Big 12 foe No. 11 Oklahoma, UCLA and the No. 34 Gamecocks.
