MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 5, 2018) – For the second straight season, the West Virginia University golf team returns to Kannapolis, North Carolina, to for the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate on Saturday and Sunday. Davidson and UNC Charlotte will host the event at The Club at Irish Creek.

In addition to the No. 42 Mountaineers, the field includes eight programs ranked in the top 100 of the Golfstat rankings. No. 28 Florida State, No. 31 Kansas, No. 49 Ohio State, No. 66 Kennesaw State, No. 80 UNCG, No. 86 Davidson, No. 88 East Carolina and No. 96 James Madison, along with App State, Charlotte, Dartmouth, High Point, Marshall and VCU, will make up the field for the event.

Play will start with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with golfers playing 36 continuous holes on the par-71, 7,099-yard course. Teams will resume play at 8:30 a.m. Sunday with a shotgun start. WVU is paired with Davidson, Kennesaw State and Marshall for the first and second rounds.

Led by a fourth-place finish from then-freshman Mark Goetz, West Virginia claimed sixth place in last season’s event.

“We’re excited to return to Irish Creek,” coach Sean Covich said. “It’s a challenging, but fair, golf course that our guys love playing. Sharp (Matthew Sharpstene) grew up in this area and has played this track many times, so hopefully, his familiarity with Irish Creek will be an advantage this week. “

Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene, senior Max Sear, junior Etienne Papineau, sophomore Logan Perkins and junior Philipp Matlari will make up the Mountaineer lineup at Irish Creek. Sharpstene is coming off back-to-back top-15 finishes at The Seminole Intercollegiate and The Hootie at Bull’s Bay. He owns a team-best 70.90 scoring average for -0.38 to par.

Sear and Papineau will each make their eighth appearance of the season and carry scoring averages of 70.95 and 72.19, respectively. Perkins will make his fifth appearance in the starting lineup after posting a top-20 finish at The Hootie in March.

Matlari will play in his fifth tournament of the season, marking his fourth time as part of the starting lineup.

Up next, West Virginia will close out the regular season with their fourth trip to Penn State’s Rutherford Intercollegiate on 13 and 14
