WVU Golf Set for Finale at Penn State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 14, 2017) – The West Virginia University golf team will cap the regular season this weekend at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by rival Penn State at the Penn State Blue Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania, on Saturday and Sunday. WVU Golf is coming off the first win of the new era after last week’s East Carolina Intercollegiate.

Paired with Rutgers and the host Nittany Lions, the Mountaineers will tee off starting at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday for 36 continuous holes at the par-71, 7,202-yard Blue Course. The final round will take place on Sunday. Eastern Michigan, VCU, Seton Hall, Columbia, Oakland, Georgetown, Xavier, Ohio, Binghamton and Towson are also slated to compete at the tournament.

No live scoring will be available for the event. A complete recap will be available at WVUsports.com at the end of each day.

“The Rutherford at Penn State is a great event for us to close out the regular season,” coach Sean Covich said. “Coach Greg Nye and his assistant Mark Leon have been great to me and our young program. They always do a great job hosting this tournament, and I know our guys are excited to play a course we saw last spring. They should have some good memories from last year’s performance.”

In 2016, the team of Alan Cooke, Easton Renwick, Chris Williams, Tristan Nicholls and Max Sear took second place with a then-low score of 859. Cooke set a then-program record of 207, finishing as the individual runner-up at six under par.

Cooke, Sear, Williams and Nicholls will be joined by Etienne Papineau in this year’s lineup. Avery Schneider will play as an individual for the second consecutive season. In addition to four returning starters, graduate assistant Jay Woodward will also bring knowledge of the course to this year’s tournament for WVU. Woodward was a three-year letterwinner for the Nittany Lions.

West Virginia took home the team trophy at last week’s East Carolina Intercollegiate. Sear finished 54 holes in a three-way tie for first place, but fell to Grant Renegar of Florida Gulf Coast in a playoff. The event was the first win since the team was revived as a varsity sport in 2015.

Sear currently leads WVU with a 73.11 scoring average. Cooke is second on the team at 73.23 and set a program record with a score of 206 for 10 under par the Seminole Intercollegiate back in March. The two have combined for six top-10 finishes this season.
