MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Despite poor weather conditions throughout the first round, the West Virginia University golf team is off to a solid start at the VCU Janney Shootout, hosted by the Rams at the Country Club of Virginia on Monday in Richmond.

The Mountaineers shot a team score of 286 for two under par and sit tied for seventh after one round. WVU has now broken par in three of their first four rounds of the season. Virginia Tech is 12 under and in first with a 276, followed by James Madison (279) and East Carolina (281).

Due to a lengthy rain delay, players completed just one round on Monday and will play the final 18 holes on Tuesday. The tournament was originally scheduled for a 54-hole format on the Tuckahoe Creek Course.

“Solid golf today by the guys,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “It was an interesting day with a four-hour rain delay, but the guys battled all day and posted our third under par team score of the season. I’m proud of freshman Etienne today. He’s showing what he’s capable of. We’re looking forward to tomorrow.”

Freshman Etienne Papineau is pacing the squad at three under par with a 69. Papineau carded five birdies across the first 18 holes and is tied for eighth place entering the second round.

Max Sear is two strokes back from Papineau and in a tie for 19th place. He recorded a trio of birdies but notched a double-bogey on hole No. 5 to shoot one under par with a 71.

Shooting one over par, Alan Cooke and Tristan Nicholls are tied for 33rd place at one over par. Cooke, who led the field in par-5 scoring, carded four birdies and five bogies to shoot 72, while Nicholls’ scorecard showed a trio of birdies and four bogeys.

Rounding out the group, Jon Ransone shot five over par for a 77. He is tied for 57th place.

West Virginia resumes play with the second and final round in a shotgun start at 8:45 Tuesday morning. The Mountaineers are paired with UNCG and Radford.
