MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 12, 2016) – After shooting four under par as a team in the first round, the West Virginia University golf team sits in sixth place after 36 holes of play at The Invitational at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort in Johns Island, South Carolina, on Monday.

The team’s first-round score of 284 is the second-best of the new era, while four under is the lowest team score in relation to par since the team was reintroduced. The Mountaineers are seven under par through 36 holes with a team score of 284-285=569. Middle Tennessee State sits atop the team leaderboard at 20 under with a 556, followed by Georgia State in second at 17 under (559) and Mississippi at 15 under (561).

“We played solid golf today,” said coach Sean Covich. “The thing I was most proud of was the fact that we closed strong in both rounds. Today was a big day for our guys. We broke a scoring record from last season in each round today. They should have confidence heading into the final round.”

Senior Alan Cooke is tied for fourth overall after making five birdies in the first round to fire a 69 and finish three under par. He added four more birdies in the second, finishing two under with a score of 70. He is five under through two rounds with a total score of 139.

After shooting four over with a 76 in the first round, sophomore Max Sear has jumped 36 spots to end the second round in a tie for 30th place. Sear recorded eight birdies in the second 18 holes, shooting five under par with a 67. Ranking second in the tournament in par-3 scoring, he is one under on the day with a score of 143.

In his collegiate debut, freshman Etienne Papineau is even par after carding a 72-72=144. He boasts nine birdies through 36 holes and is tied for 36th place.

Sophomore Tristan Nicholls shot two under in the first round, but struggled in the second and finished four over par. He registered a score of 70-76=146 and is two over par for a tie for 50th place.

Senior Chris Williams is tied for 66th place at 73-77=150. He used an eagle and a birdie to finish one over par through the first 18 holes, but shot five over through the second and is plus six on the day.

Playing as an individual, Cole Hand is in 90th place with a score of 81-78=159. He has three birdies through two rounds and is 15 over.

The Mountaineers tee off for the third and final round on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at The Ocean Course.
