WVU Golf Wins THP Mountaineer Invitational

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Three Mountaineers finished in the top 10 as the No. 25 West Virginia University golf team claimed the team title at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Tuesday at Pete Dye Golf Club Bridgeport, West Virginia.

The Mountaineers shot 294-284-286=864 as a team to finish even par atop the team leaderboard. Florida Atlantic was the runner-up at three-over, followed by Southern Miss at 21-over par.

“It feels good any time you win,” coach Sean Covich said. “It’s hard to win in this sport. You usually have 14, 15 opponents and sometimes you have a great week and finish fifth or sixth. To be able to come out on top at your home event, that is pretty special.”

After shooting a one-under-par 71 in the first round, junior Mark Goetz birdied a pair of holes on the front nine of the second round. However, he bogeyed four holes to finish the round two-over with a 74. He then registered three birdies and a bogey to shoot a two-under-par 70, tying for second place with a 54-hole total of 215 for one-under.

Classmate Matthew Sharpstene also tied for the runner-up spot at one-under. After shooting a one-under 71 in the first round, he used four birdies to balance two bogeys and a double-bogey to finish even-par with a 72 in the second. Sharpstene also shot even-par with a 72 in the third, totaling 215 in the tournament.

Senior Etienne Papineau finished three-over-par with a 75 in the first and bounced back with three birdies in second to card a 69 for three-under. He added three more birdies in the third round, but a pair of bogeys and a double bogey put him at even-par in the round. His three-round total of 216 put him in a tie for seventh at even-par.

Freshman Nico Lang posted his first career top-15 finish as he took 14th place with a five-over par score of 221. Despite struggling the first round with a 77, he bounced back to shoot even par in the second and third round (72).

Senior Philipp Matlari shot 77-71-76=224, tying for 20th place at eight-over par.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Kurtis Grant bounced back from a first-round 79 to shoot an even-par 72 in the second. He used six birdies to card a 69 in the third for three-under. He finished at four-over-par with a 220 for a 13th-place finish.

Junior Logan Perkins finished with a score of 74-74-75=223, finishing seven-over and tied for 17th place. Freshman Christian Boyd shot 79-74-74=227 for 11 over par as he tied for 31st place. Classmate Trent Tipton finished tied for 63rd at 20-over, carding scores of 83-75-78=236.

The Mountaineers now depart for the Big 12 Match Play Championship, which will run Friday through Sunday at the Golf Club of Houston Oaks in Houston, Texas.
