MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 7, 2018) – The West Virginia University golf team will host its fourth annual home tournament this when the Mountaineers welcome 13 teams to The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia, on Monday and Tuesday.

Defending champion Bowling Green returns for the 2018 event. WVU also will host Rutgers, James Madison, Akron, Boston College, Seton Hall, Winthrop, Davidson, Ohio, Georgetown and Marshall at Pete Dye. Golfers will tee off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday for 36 continuous holes. They will resume play for the third and final round on Tuesday, with tee times starting at 8 a.m.

Rated the No. 1 course in West Virginia, Pete Dye Golf Club is built on a former coal mine. It is a par-72, 7,308-yard course.

“We’re excited to host this event again at Pete Dye Golf Club,” coach Sean Covich said. “I think our guys are pretty excited to be able to play a home event. When we started this program a few years ago, having a home tournament was something we wanted to provide our players and we couldn’t be happier with our partnership with both Pete Dye Golf Club and The Health Plan.”

West Virginia resumed varsity competition in 2015 after a thirty-year hiatus and will host its fourth home tournament this season. Known as the Mountaineer Intercollegiate in 2015 and 2016, WVU paired with The Health Plan starting in 2017. Previous team champions include Bowling Green (2017), Arkansas (2016) and Penn State (2015). Past medalists include Marshall’s Alex Weiss (2017), Miami U.’s Patrick Flavin (2016) and Cincinnati’s Davis Baxter (2015). Arkansas shot six under with an 858 in 2016 for the lowest team score in tournament history, while Marshall’s Alex Weiss shot eight under with a 208 for the lowest individual score (the tournament was shortened to 36 holes in 2015).

The Mountaineers finished fourth in 2017, its best finish at the event thus far. Current junior Etienne Papineau posted the best individual performance as a sophomore in 2017, tying for the runner-up spot.

Freshman Kurtis Grant, senior Max Sear, Papineau, sophomore Matthew Sharpstene and junior Philipp Matlari will represent West Virginia at the event. Senior Tristan Nicholls and sophomores Mark Goetz and Logan Perkins will play as individuals.

In his collegiate debut at the Old Town Club Collegiate in September, Grant shot 69-69-68=206 to tie the lowest tournament score on record at WVU. He tied for 12th place overall.
