WVU’s Cooke Wins 97th West Virginia Amateur

wvu marker-5863WVU’s Alan Cooke won medalist honors at the 97th West Virginia Amateur on the strength of a 3-under final round on the TPC Old White at The Greenbrier.

“It was a really cool experience to win a tournament I grew up following,” said Cooke, who is a rising senior for the Mountaineers. “I’m excited to represent both the Mountaineers and the state of West Virginia at The Greenbrier next month.”

Cooke’s win qualifies him for a spot in the PGA TOUR’s Greenbrier Classic July 7 – 10.

Atop the leaderboard at two over entering the final round of play, Cooke birdied five holes to shoot 67 in the final round on The Old White TPC and claim the title by eight strokes. He finished with a score of 72-68-76-67=283 and was the only player to finish the tournament under par at three under.

A native of Vienna, West Virginia, Cooke found himself tied for second after carding a 72 to finish even par on The Greenbrier course through the first 18 holes. He fired a 68 for two under par in the second round on The Old White TPC, taking a one-stroke lead and easily making the cut. Cooke struggled through 18 windy holes on The Greenbrier Course Wednesday, shooting two over par with a 76 but increasing his lead to two strokes entering the final round of play.

“I’m extremely proud of Alan and excited for him because I know that, being a native West Virginian, he’s always dreamed of winning this tournament,” said WVU head coach Sean Covich. “I told him earlier this spring he was going to have a big summer so it’s great to see him get this win. “I expect a lot of Old Gold and Blue to be walking in the gallery at The Greenbrier Classic next month!”

Teammate Avery Schneider also took home a title this week, tying for medalist honors at the Southern Amateur Qualifier at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. He shot two under par with a score of 70 to qualify for a spot in the 110th Southern Amateur Championship at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on July 13-16.
