A January 2024 Round at Washtenaw Golf Club; The Streak Extends To 107
I was busy watching bowl games on January 1 (Congratulations To Michigan!) so my first round of the year came on January 2.
This extends my streak of months with at least one round played in Michigan to 107.
The Streak is not why I decided to go play, however. When I reached 100 months, I decided to keep track, but to no longer be worried as to whether it actually continues.
No, I got out because I had cabin fever after several days indoors due to bowl games or just plain bad weather. There hasn’t been any snow, but it has been a rainy and cold couple of weeks.
On January 2, the air temperatures reached as high as 38, so with the proper winter golf gear, I was good to go.
I loaded up a Sunday bag with six clubs and set off for Washtenaw Golf Club.
As an aside — if you are in Southeast Michigan and are Jonesing for a golf fix, give Washtenaw a call. They are nearly always open.
I was not the only person on the course. As the pro, Matt, said any time the ground is free of snow, there will be people out playing.
It is good to know I am not the only crazy one.
One of the nice things about golf this time of year is that I have very low expectations for performance. Layers of clothes, cold and often hard ground conditions are not good ingredients for a great round. That mentally frees me up to fool around a bit.
On such days, I have just six clubs in my bag: driver, 3 hybrid, seven iron, nine iron, gap wedge and putter. That makes every shot but the putting an exercise in imagination.
It is a fun way to play.
I might cut it down to four at some point.
Conditions at the course were quite good considering that it is January in Michigan. The greens were much slower than anyone has come to expect from Washtenaw, but they were still smooth.
I look forward to more rounds in January, as long as the weather holds.

Ha ha ha! I teed off at 11am with 32 degrees and 17 mph breeze. A tad cold on my hands but after walking the first 3 holes everything warmed up and it was fine. Shot 82 playing preferred lies through the green and in sand bunkers.
I thought you might give it a go. There were two additional cars in the parking lot when I left around 2:30pm so there were maybe 4-5 of us.
