Augusta National’s First Female Members: Condi Rice and Darla Moore

Augusta National, famed home of the Masters, has added its first two female members: Condi Rice and financier Darla Moore. From the ananouncement:

“The home of the Masters has invited former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October. Both women have accepted.”

Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne:

“This is a joyous occasion. These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership. It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their Green Jackets when the Club opens this fall.”

Looks like Martha Burke is going to have to find another way to drum up publicity and fundraising money.

  1. I can’t believe it took this long before they finally accepted women at Augusta National. There was a lot of media coverage about the issue this past April … most of it negative about the issue.

I imagine the start of more women joining one of the famous golf clubs int he world.

  2. I actually think that all of the protests, media coverage, et. al. actually served to delay the inclusion of women. There’s no way that Augusta National was going to appear to cave into pressure. So as long as people were making a stink, no change would come.

The real change, I think, is the result of relatively younger members being admitted and asking behind closed doors “Why not women?”

Its also not as if women didn’t play there. Unlike some truly exclusive clubs, women were welcom eto play.
