A few weeks ago, there were rampant rumors that the European Tour was set for a takeover by the PGA TOUR. It made a lot of sense. Even as the PGA Tour has prospered, the European Tour is in a slump. The European Tour has lost a number of long standing events in recent years—six in Spain, for example. Even the much vaunted Race For Dubai prize has at times been in question.
There were still 45 events on the European Tour schedule this year, but considering the number of Euro Tour stars now playing the PGA TOUR full time, those left can’t be that enticing.
Now, add the Avantha Masters to the list of European Tour events which are no more.
