Here’s a feel good golf story for the holiday season: PGA professionals from Boyne Golf raised more than $48,000 this year for Northern Michigan charities, including the Manna Food Project and the First Tee of Northern Michigan.
One of the best things about golf is the sport’s dedication to charities. As a fundraising vehicle, golf raises nearly $4 billion annually. That includes not only PGA TOUR events — each of which is sponsored by a charity — but also efforts like those from Boyne Golf, and the innumerable golf outings held for local causes.
Over the past 20 years, TEAM BOYNE has raised more than $450,000 through the annual Harbor Cup golf event, and surrounding year-long fundraising efforts, including donations from the members of the Country Club of Boyne and Bay Harbor Golf Club, merchandise sales, and pro-am and scramble golf events around the area.
The Manna Food Project supplies food to more than 35 pantries and agencies in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties. This years’s contribution from TEAM BOYNE will provide more than 122,000 meals to community members.
The First Tee of Northern Michigan promotes character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf. The donation helps to increase programming opportunities and reach more youth.
The Harbor Cup is an annual event that pits PGA professionals from Boyne Golf’s properties against the PGA pros from Petosky area courses in a 54 hole Ryder Cup style event.
“The heritage and meaning of the Harbor Cup continues to grow along with charitable contributions that reach deserving Northern Michigan charities. We are so proud of this yearlong effort that each team makes. TEAM BOYNE is honored to generate awareness of the incredibly vital Manna Food Project and The First Tee of Northern Michigan,” said Bernie Friedrich, Senior Vice President of Boyne Resorts’ golf operations and resort sales and TEAM BOYNE’s Harbor Cup Assistant Captain. “The tireless and dedicated work of golf professionals from both teams and the faithful support from Country Club of Boyne and Bay Harbor Golf Club members, homeowners and team members has made a meaningful impact on this community that means so much to us all.”
Last week, BOYNE Golf professionals presented a check totaling $30,500 to Manna Food Project, a check of $14,500 to the First Tee and $3,000 in donations to other Northern Michigan charities.
TEAM BOYNE Harbor Cup included Captain John Myers and Associate Captains Bernie Friedrich, Josh Richter, and Brandon Brown. Players for TEAM BOYNE included Chaz Babin, Steve Niezgoda, Scott Pussehl, Corey May, Casey Powers, Barry Redmond, Paulo Rocha, Jerry Roman, Dave Trudell, Dan Turcott, Bob Wilson.

One of my favorite events to participate in. Miss playing in the Harbor Cup and raising money for a great cause.
