In spite of his slip at Pebble Beach (both figuratively and literally), Phil Mickelson is the bettors favorite to win the Northern Trust Open. I’d normally think they were overly optimistic, but Phil has a very good track record in the West Coast swing.
Sergio Garcia has been playing well, and it shows in the 16/1 odds for his 2013 PGA Tour debut. I’d be more interested, however, in placing a bet on whether he manages to go all Sergio—hacking at a trap, spitting in a cup or just generally throwing a tantrum.
The man with one of the sweetest swings on the planet, Charl Schwartzel is in at 18/1. He is making his 2013 PGA Tour debut after placing second in last week’s Joburg Open in South Africa. Charl will hang around for a while, too. He’s scheduled for the WGC Accenture Match Play, the Honda Classic, the WGC-Cadillac, the Valero Texas Open and of course, The Masters.
Dustin Johnson is a mystery. All the talent and athletic ability in the world, but building a reputation he doesn’t want—or deserve. He’s in at 20/1, along with Luke Donald. I keep wondering if this is Luke’s year for a Major—perhaps the US Open.
In all, this is a really good field, in spite of the absence of Brandt Snedeker and that guy with the 14 Majors. There’s Adam Scott (22/1), Bubba Watson (22/1), Bill Haas (28/1) and Keegan Bradley (28/1), Lee Westwood (28/1), Webb Simpson (28/1), Hunter Mahan (30/1), Ryan Moore (30/1), Charles Howell (33/1), Matt Kuchar (33/1) and many more recognizable names. All told, 20 of the 30 players who made it to the 2012 TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola will play in the Northern Trust Open: Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Ryan Moore, Zach Johnson, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Webb Simpson, Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Keegan Bradley, Bo Van Pelt, Carl Pettersson, Adam Scott, Ernie Els, Scott Piercy, John Huh and John Senden. From the Official World Golf Ranking, 18 of the top 30 are in the field and 25 of the top 50.
Actually, I find it curious that Tiger has not been back to the Northern Trust since 2006. He played his first Tour event at the then-Los Angeles Open at the age of 16 via a sponsors invite. I guess that key is that he didn’t win in eleven tries, and Tiger likes to pile up wins on friendly courses.
