RIP Donald Sutherland and A Message For Golfers
The great actor Donald Sutherland passed today. Among his dozens of memorable roles: Hawkeye Pierce in MASH; John Klute in Klute; John Baxter in Don’t Look Now; Calvin Jarrett in Ordinary People; Liam Devlin in The Eagle Has Landed; Professor Jennings in Animal House; and Merrick Jamison-Smythe in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Sutherland made 141 movies, but the role I most enjoyed was as the proto beatnik / hippie Oddball in the World War II comedy drama Kelly’s Heroes.
What does any of this have to do with golf? It’s a quote from the movie that I often say to myself when I find myself in danger of getting my angry over my play and muttering obscenities under my breath.
Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves. Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don’t you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
Oddball, in Kelly’s Heroes.
