West Virginia Golf Sixth at Rutherford Intercollegiate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 16, 2017) – Paced by a top-10 finish by Chris Williams, the West Virginia University golf team finished sixth at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on Sunday at Penn State’s Blue Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania.

Williams shot one under par in the final round, jumping 19 spots take tenth place overall. He carded a score of 72-76-70=218 to end the tournament at five over par.

The West Virginia golf team shot 31 over par with a team score of 883 in taking sixth place. Host Penn State and Ohio tied for the team title at 16 over par with matching scores of 868.

“That was not the closing round we wanted, but it was good for us to play in these high winds as we get ready for Big 12s out in Kansas next week,” coach Sean Covich said. “Chris played really well out there today, and Tristan (Nicholls) was solid as well. We look forward to competing at Prairie Dunes next week.”

Max Sear just missed the top 10, finishing in 11th place. He shot 74-70-75=219 to finish a stroke behind Williams at six over.

Playing as an individual, Avery Schneider finished in 31st place. His scorecard showed 71-72-81=224 for 11 over par. Teammate Alan Cooke tied for 35th place at 12 over par, shooting 77-70-78=225.

Tristan Nicholls shot two over par on the day, carding a 73. He finished at 76-78-73=227 and 14 over par for 45th place.

Etienne Papineau rounded out the group, shooting 75-74-81=230. He finished 17 over par and in 57th place.

The Mountaineers head to the 2017 Big 12 Championship next week. The event will take place Monday through Wednesday at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
