WVU Golf Third at Health Plan Mountaineer Invite
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (Oct. 9, 2017) – With just one round officially in the books, the West Virginia University golf team sits third at three over par at the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia, on Monday.
Play was called due to darkness just before 7 p.m. While golfers played most of the second round, the scores will not be finalized until scorecards are signed following the conclusion of play on Tuesday. Players will resume the second round in an 8:30 a.m. start and continue onto the third round of action.
The Mountaineers shot a team score of 291 in the first round. Rutgers sits atop the team leaderboard with a score of 282 for one under par, while Bowling Green is second at two over with a 290 after one round.
Unofficially, WVU golf slipped to seventh in the second round at nine over par. The Mountaineers have five holes remaining.
“We slipped up on a few holes late in the afternoon,” coach Sean Covich said. “Other than that, we played pretty solid. I look forward to the final day tomorrow.”
Etienne Papineau used five birdies to card a 69 in the first round, finishing in a three-way tie for the individual lead at three under par.
Matthew Sharpstene ended the first 18 holes tied for 12th place. He birdied a trio of holes to finish even par with a 72. Playing as an individual, Drew Dewald balanced five birdies and five bogeys to tie Sharpstene at even par with a 72.
Max Sear shot two over with a 74, finishing the first round in 23rd place. Teammate Avery Schneider, playing as an individual, also ended the round two over par.
Tristan Nicholls carded a 76 for four over par. He sits in 42nd place. Individual Mark Goetz is a stroke back at five over with a score of 77, tying for 55th place. Philipp Matlari finished the first round at six over par, shooting a 78. He sits in 65th place.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Logan Perkins was eight over with a score of 80. He sits in 72nd place.
