Payne Stewart At The Ryder Cup – 1993 The Belfry

In the 1993 Ryder Cup at The Belfry, Payne Stewart went 3-1-0 to help the United States team to its second straight win. The European team had won the previous three Ryder Cup matches.

payne-stewartTeam Europe had a one point lead heading into the singles matches. The United States won six of the Sunday matches, however, and went home with a 15-13 victory.

In all, Stewart played on five Ryder Cup teams (1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, and 1999). The US team went 3-1-1 when he was a player.

Like Jack Nicklaus, one of Stewart’s most memorable Ryder Cup moments was a concession. In 1999 at Brookline, Stewart too offense at the heckling Colin Montgomerie endured. With a US victory assured, Stewart conceded a putt (and his own singles match) to Colin Montgomerie on the 18th hole. “This game is about sportsmanship,” Stewart said afterward
