An Early December Round In Michigan Extends “The Streak”

With my weekend outing at Green Oaks Golf Course in Ypsilanti, I extended “The Streak”: forty-six consecutive months with at least one round played in Michigan. It is actually not that hard to pull off the feat in December — there always are a few days that cooperate. The same is true of March. January and February, however, are always touch and go.

I am fortunate, however, to live near three courses that are open more often that not. My home course, Green Oaks is usually open through December, and re-opens sometime in March. It also often will open for a day or two in January or February if we have a thaw. Fox Hills, in nearlby Plymouth, Michigan is open through much of the year. I have played there on some very cold January and February days. If there’s no snow on the ground, they seem to be open.

If all else fails, I can always stop by for a round at Ann Arbor’s Huron Hills, which pretty much always has its flags in place. When the clubhouse is unmanned, there’s a box where you can drop your payment. Throughout most of the winter, only the first seven holes are open (the other eleven are on the hill side of the property and treacherous), but you can play it multiple times to get in nine or eighteen.

Hopefully, I’ll get in a few more rounds in December. Then I just have to wait for my opportunity in January and February.
