I think that this just might be the most important news in golf this week: Starting next year, Augusta National will host a women’s amateur championship, with the final round to be played at Augusta National the Saturday before the Masters.
The Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship field will consist of 72 players and 54 holes. The first 36 holes of the tournament will be held at the nearby Champions Retreat Golf Club. After the field is cut to 30, the final 18 will be held at Augusta National.
Meanwhile, the Drive, Chip and Putt competition will be held on the Sunday before The Masters.
While I am disappointed that Augusta National did not see fit to create a Women’s Masters that is equal to the men’s this is a good start.
