Couples, Clarke Are Captains For First ICONS Cup

In an interesting take on Ryder and Presidents Cup style competitions, a new event called The ICONS cup will feature two 12 man teams consisting of low-handicap, top tier athletes. The two teams will be captained by Fred Couples and Darren Clarke.

Couples first two picks are Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Modano and Ken Griffey, Junior.

Darren Clarke’s roster currently includes soccer stars Luis Figo, Robbie Fowler, Andriy Shevchenko and Dwight Yorke; renowned cricketers Kapil Dev, Brian Lara and Shane Warne; rugby standouts George Gregan, Brian O’Driscoll and Mike Tindall, MBE; and five-time Olympic gold medal rower Sir Steve Redgrave

The event, which was created by Worldwide Sports & Entertainment, Ltd., will be played April 22-24 in Dubai at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course. Day One of the ICONS Cup will feature morning foursomes (alternate shot) followed by 12 singles matches (Thursday, April 23). The competition concludes the following day with 12 additional singles matches.
