GAM Women’s Championship Tees Off At Washtenaw
Seventy-six golfers teed off at Washtenaw Golf Club for the Golf Association of Michigan Women’s Championship presented by Carl’s Golfland on July 17.
The 2023 edition is the 32nd GAM Women’s Championship.
Defending Champion Sophie Stevens of Highland did not tee it up, playing instead in the US Girls Junior Amateur in Colorado Springs.
Last year’s runner-up, Bridget Boczar of Canton, an Oakland University golfer, is in the field, as is last year’s Michigan Women’s Amateur Champion Anci Dy, and this summer’s Michigan Girls’ Junior State Amateur Champion Lauren Timpf of Macomb.
Washtenaw Golf Club, which was founded in 1899, is one of the oldest clubs in the state of Michigan. It has — at one point or another — hosted most of the top Michigan State championships.
The 1955 Michigan Open featured three Major Championship winners: Horton Smith (winner of the first Masters), Chick Harbert and Walter Burkemo. Also in that field were Michigan Golf Hall of Famers Chuck Kocsis and John Barnum.
A private course throughout most of the 20th century and into the 21st, Washtenaw Golf Club now is open to the public. The KMD Investors group that took control of the club in January 2020 is dedicated to keeping the club at up to the high standards of its glory days. Renovation and restoration projects are underway, following a master plan created by Michigan golf architect Raymond Hearn.
Michigan Golf Hall of Famer Dave Kendall, one of the owners, frequently says that his goal is to ensure that as players return each year, he wants them to notice that the course is better than it was before.
