Golf News Roundup: Jimemez Breaks Leg; Tiger Turns 37; PGA Tour Starts Anew

A broken leg in a skiing accident will cost Miguel Angel Jimenez at least five months of the 2013 season. Last year, Jimemez became the European Tour’s oldest winner at age 48.  Jimenez has 19 career victories.

I wish him a speedy and complete recovery. Jimenez is one of the most interesting characters in golf, with a gait and figure so distinctive you can pick him out from three fairways away.

Tiger Turns 37

Tiger Woods turned 37 on Sunday, Dec. 30. I’ve given up making predictions about Tiger, but will state the obvious: with each turn of the calendar, it become increasingly less likely that he’ll break Jack’s record.

Still, there’s been no shortage of late of major winners in their late thirties and forties:

  • At the Masters: Phil has won at age 34, 36 and 40. Cabrera turned 40 in 2009. Vijay was 37 in his 2000 Masters win. Faldo was 39 in 1996. O’Meara was 41 in 1998. Crenshaw was 43 in 1995.

  • At the US Open: Cabrera was 38 in 2007. Retief Goosen was 35 in 2004. Payne Stewart was 42 in 1999. Corey Pavin was 36 in 1995.

  • At the British Open: Tom Lehman was 37 in 1996. O’Meara was 41 in 1998. Todd Hamilton was 39 in 2004. Harrington was 37 in 2008; 36 in 2007.  Stewart Cink was 35 in 2009. Darren Clarke was 43 in 2011. Ernie Els was 42 last year.

  • At the PGA Championship: Harrington at 37 in 2008; Mark Brooks at 35 in 1996; Vijay was 41 in 2004. Phil was 35 in 2005.

PGA Tour Kicks Off The 2013 Season

The PGA Tour kicks off the 2013 season this week with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. The limited field event is restricted to only those who won last year on Tour. That, combined with the Hawaii location, makes it worth watching.
